Personal Theme Songs
When you mention a theme song, what comes to mind? A television show or movie? Or how about a commercial you see on TV or hear on the radio? Starting back in 1994, I started to have what I call my own Personal Theme Song.
A Personal Theme Song is a song (obviously!) that you play when you first get up in the morning, every morning, or the last song you play before going to bed every night. In 1998 when I was in college, it was a song by Sarah McLachlan called Building A Mystery. At the time, my friends considered me to be a very mysterious and odd individual. I chose it mainly because one of the lyrics goes something like, “you’re a beautiful… a beautiful fucked-up man…”. Needless to say, saying that I was a little fucked up at the time wouldn’t have been too far from the truth.
Somewhere between 1999 and 2000, my theme song was Stories I Tell by Toad The Wet Sprocket. You see, at the time, I was still in college and decided that one of my life dreams was to write and publish a book. Well, almost a decade later, forget publishing, I’m still working on the writing part.
From 2000 till about 2004, my theme songs varied. Generally, it was any heart-felt song by Sheryl Crow. Needless to say, I had a thing for Sheryl Crow. Unfortunately, during this period of time, I was working so damn much and living with other people, sleeping on sofas and such, that I wasn’t always able to play a specific song once or twice a day.
In 2005, I downloaded the song Crazy by Alanis Morisette. It’s a song that I’ve heard other artists sing long before she did. However, Alanis Morisette sang it better than anyone else had before, so when the album dropped in November of that year, I bought a copy. Why did I pick Crazy? Just think about it… It’s a long story that I will cover eventually.
What’s your theme song? Let me know by publishing a comment!
