“The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30 second sound bytes (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance.” — Carl Sagan

  1. I feel very sad that the current generation is simply reduced to this. I wonder if there’s something that could yet be done to reverse this downward spiral to ignorance.

  2. It’s very true. Even in the case of moral decay, things just don’t happen at once, it starts happening slowly by slowly.

  3. The quote of Mr Sagan was so depth. All I can say is that, pseudoscience and superstition when become attached to allow us to relinquish obligation for our own lives.

  4. It’s funny the way the world sometimes works. We are at that time where ignorance is being celebrated somehow.

  5. This quote is really on point ,things are not longer the way it used to be. Most things are decreasing drastically than increasing or being upward mobile.

  6. Such a simple quote but it carries a lot of heavy and inspiring content. We need to go back to our ancestors to learn such important lessons.

  7. Maybe its just me but I feel Carl Sagan should have paraphrased his quote by using words and phrases that even a non native English speaker will be able to grasp..all I see are big words and combination of phrases that make no sense to me..

  8. We will always experience change whether posotive or negative. When we should hope for more should be positivity.

  9. This is very telling of where our society is in terms of knowledge. It’s like we have collectively gotten more dumb.

  10. This quote is absolutely right. The media has stopped trying to educate the masses and are instead focusing on getting ratings. It’s abhorring.

  11. Pseudoscience and superstition are the biggest enemies of human advancement. Carl Sagan couldn’t be more right on this!

  12. This is not only true in America but in the world over. The media has truly ruined our social fabric.

  13. Nowadays the media will do anything to attract more viewers even at the expense of dumbing down entire masses. It’s a sad state that we need to strive to fix.

  14. This is so true not just in the US but all over media. In my area for example , All we get are love stories, sex and violence in our shows. Nothing more and its disappointing.

  15. I’m not in the US, so I can have an objective opinion. But I believe in people who still think and make choices.
