Enigmatic

Enigmatic

In my life I am often misunderstood, and my writing, especially during the days of my youth was often difficult to interpret or understand; mysterious, fleeting, and wild. In a word, enigmatic.

140 Characters

Ever since I was young, I incessantly took notes and wrote down observations. Often times, they were about experiences I had, written generally within a couple of days of the events. I also took many photographs, and countless pages of notes, but put simply, since the age of digital was still years away, many of the photographs failed to capture my true vision, and the pages of writing ended up getting lost, misplaced, or thrown away, either intentionally or by accident.

Thomas Slatin On How He Finds Inspiration

Thomas Slatin On How He Finds Inspiration

Ever since I started a blog, people have asked me where I find my inspiration. My main source of inspiration comes from real life experiences, which is why the vast majority of my writing is non-fiction. In 2011, I wrote a list of 80 Journal Writing Prompts, which was in response to the repetitive emails asking me for advice for inspiration. The journal writing prompts were posted in April of 2011, and quickly became the most visited post on my blog, and after going viral, received an average of 20,000 visits per day for several months thereafter. I knew I had stumbled upon an idea, if even...

I Am Obsessed With Abandoned Buildings

I Am Obsessed With Abandoned Buildings

I am obsessed with abandoned buildings, places, and things. But of the many locations and buildings I have photographed, only two have captured my interest that today, literally years later, I still think about a handful of these places on an almost daily basis. It seems as if I am addicted to these places, as if something is literally begging me to return. The Hotel Adler Spa in Sharon Springs, New York occupies the majority of my thoughts whenever I think about abandoned buildings. To make matters worse, I pass this location on a regular basis, and every time I pass, I think of it as yet another...

The Nobel Committee

The Nobel Committee

11 November 1994 there, Hey, they're Udo!--there, Glad to hear from you at long last. We thought the weather was delaying the mail stage from Stamford, but nothing stops it, we now realize. When they take a pledge to deliver Udo's letters, they deliver. Or else. Excellent news about Thomas. Straight A's! We always knew he had what it takes. Next he'll be taking extension courses from Harvard. If he says he wants a Nobel Prize, don't fight it. Most kids howl for a driver's license. You're lucky. As you see, I am still using my steam-powered word processor, but relief...
